Chapter 5

Since there were no windows in the room, it was dark when I opened my eyes. I reached toward the nightstand for my phone, only for the memories of last night to come crashing in.

I sighed as my right arm fell over the edge of the bed. My left still lay across Jen’s shoulder, and for now, I wanted it to stay there. Her warmth provided a reassuring stability that helped me relax as my thoughts went to what had happened l. I wondered how Cat and Marilyn had fared after we left, and what became of the burning buildings.

“Are you awake?” Jen’s voice was soft but not sleepy at all, and I guessed that she’d woken up at least an hour before I had.

I sighed. “Yeah. Even though I don’t want to be.”

Jen laughed and sat up. “Tell me about it. I’ve been watching the news on my phone for the last hour.”

“What’s it say? Anything about Cat or Marilyn?” I didn’t bother hiding my worry. I was sure that Jen felt the same.

She sat up and turned on the lights, then grabbed the remote and switched the TV on as well. “No, but you should probably see this anyway.” Jen swung her legs over the edge of the bed. “In the meantime, I’ll go out and grab you something to wear.”

I leaned back against the headboard as an advertisement for a weight loss program gave way to the news. A young anchorman sat next to Technocrat in a simple, clean interview room, both of them dressed in dark colors and wearing large, fake smiles.

The screen in the background showed the warehouses in the light of day, several of them charred by fire or marked by bullet holes. The large one in the center of the image was completely destroyed, and I could see the ruined pieces of Technocrat’s mechanical beast lying around. At least I knew who’d won that fight.

“Police are still investigating the mysterious explosions at the Aquatrans warehouses last night,” the anchor began in a serious tone. “Preliminary investigations revealed signs of an altercation between Supers, as well as a hidden underground lab, thought to be owned by Technocrat Enterprises. Here in the studio, we have Technocrat himself, Mr. Prescott, who has reached out to us to discuss the matter.”

Compared to the fanatical voice from last night, Technocrat looked professional, with a simple black suit jacket over a white shirt. His blond hair was perfectly combed back, and his blue eyes radiated with an understanding warmth. “Thank you for having me, Jacob. I’d love to clear the air as much as I can, so please, ask away.”

Jacob nodded and clasped his hands together on the desk. “Mr. Prescott, there have been accusations that your recent ‘Everyone’s Super’ campaign has been involved in dangerous, unethical experimentation. The discovery of this lab appears to confirm those suspicions.”
